Complete Frustration

I have spent the past two weeks, as we all have, listening and watching all things Michael. I am fed up with it personally and embarrassed professionally. I am not saying that Michael Jackson was not an important figure in American culture nor that his music did not touch people around the globe - I am just AMAZED that this one man overshadowed so many important worldly events. I am frustrated that in a bad economy, in a time of war, in a time of civil unrest in China and Iran, that the front pages of websites and papers, the top stories on newscasts and talk radio was all about one man. "Because it sells papers, because it sells ad time and ad space, ratings and page views", is NOT an excuse.

It is for this reason that I am going to do something about it. Its not a calling, its not even a mission, it is just going to be my way of making a difference and a commitment to self to give some of my time to help a cause I feel very strongly about. So starting today, I am going to focus my time and effort to supporting the men and women who serve this country. I am going to do everything I can to support the families of these brave men and women. I am going to commit time to organizations who believe in the same things I do.

This blog is dedicated to this cause. I intend to write about an organization a week to hopefully use my voice and my thoughts through all these new social media tools, to share and collaborate with others. I need to make a difference and to ensure that focus is kept on what is so important to me.

I have the good fortune to be the General Manager of the Pentagon Channel and the Director of Emerging Media. I have the ability and power to bring attention to stories about military support and I have been doing so successfully with the help of a very talented staff. But this is about ME making a difference. I will be using content from the entire DoD family to help me drive home the point that there is no one person more important than another, that there is no one organization greater in importance than another - that each individual, each family, each organization deserves our support and attention.

Share your stories with me, communicate with me - help me make this initiative something of substance.

  1. Brian,
I wholeheartly agree and applaud you not necessasarily speaking out about the insanity of the media in this country and what it has become but for giving your word publicly that you will be dedicating your time, talents and efforts to causes that are greater and more important than ONE person. The media is an embarrassment - it's not news and hasn't been for years. It's all about opinions and who's selling more ad time. My frustration also lies in the fact that Jon and Kate Plus 8 getting divorced, OJ Simpson trials, Britney Spears drug habits all of this garbage literally, is what the people in our country care about most. It's about the 'dumbing down' of America. The fact that intellectually it just gets worse and worse. Michael Jackson, yes, was a very prominent figure in the world. He did do a lot of good, and I have to wonder if he would even be troubled by all the attention this is receiving. According to all who I heard speak yesterday, he gave to so many in need, charities, friends - that he himself would have probably wanted CNN of all people to air an entire day of PSA's supporting not only our troops but those suffering in the fight against AIDS, Cancer, Drug Addictions. Your determination to raise your support of our troops is remarkable, as we all know what you do for a living already contributes. Anyone who knows you, knows that yes, you are brilliant (magical actually) in what you do and how you do it - but I know that every decision you make there is based on Is it good for the troops- does it serve these men and women in the light of which they deserve. I too, as you know because it's how we met, support the troops as well and have through the USO of Metro DC. I, the Director of Marketing Partnerships and Promotions for Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall, created and made it my mission to make it happen, an initiative to get a large corporation buy out an entire performance of the Christmas Spectacular and give all 6,000 seats to the troops and their families for FREE. My simple mission in that was ONLY to give these men and women and their families 90 minutes of JOY in their difficult, frustrating, scary life. It's been 3 years now and it continues. However, yet again, my love, you inspire me. You remind me by example that it's all even BIGGER than that. That challenges for the right causes are just the way to do it- I applaud and join you in taking your support of the troops to the next level. I am there with you, volunteering, creating and making it all happen with you. We will come up with some ideas this weekend. Again, Brian, I admire your courage and integrity. You are an incredible man and I am proud to be with you in this life on our journey.

  2. This blog makes me glas d to be a fan of Fox news, Sarah Palin, etc. The importance of a GI sent home in a casket on Tues. was overshadowed by Michael Jackson-disgusting. I also see no economic slowdown and a hell of a lot of $ spent on MJ's funeral-I guess there are enough people spending money on their useless time off to do that stuff. Stop crying about this-they could obviously afford the time off and the $ spent on it...

    Kudos to you.
